How the bmi calculator works
Body Mass Index compares your weight with your height. It is quick, free and strongly linked with health risk across large populations, which is why doctors use it as a first screening check.
BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m)²Example: 75 kg at 1.75 m → 75 ÷ (1.75 × 1.75) = 24.5.
The healthy weight range is the weight that gives a BMI between 18.5 and 22.9 at your height. Ideal body weight is the range given by four clinical formulas (Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi), which are based on height and sex.
Reading your result
| BMI | Asian-Indian category | WHO international |
|---|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight | Underweight |
| 18.5 – 22.9 | Healthy | Normal |
| 23 – 24.9 | Overweight | Normal |
| 25 and above | Obese | Overweight from 25, obese from 30 |
We use the lower Asian-Indian cut-offs because South Asians tend to carry more body fat, and develop diabetes and heart-disease risk, at a lower BMI than Western populations.
Tips & limitations
- BMI can’t tell muscle from fat. If you lift regularly, a “high” BMI may simply mean more muscle — check your body fat too.
- Weigh yourself first thing in the morning, after the toilet and before eating, for the most consistent reading.
- Waist size matters: a waist above 90 cm (men) or 80 cm (women) signals extra risk even at a healthy BMI.
- BMI isn’t designed for children, pregnant women or the elderly.
Frequently asked questions
What is a healthy BMI for Indians?
For Indian adults, a BMI of 18.5 to 22.9 is considered healthy. A BMI of 23–24.9 is overweight and 25 or above is obese, according to Indian consensus guidelines.
Is BMI accurate for people who lift weights?
Not always. BMI only uses height and weight, so muscular people can be classed as overweight while having low body fat. Pair BMI with a body-fat estimate and waist measurement for a fuller picture.
What is the difference between healthy weight and ideal weight?
Healthy weight is the whole range that keeps your BMI between 18.5 and 22.9. Ideal body weight comes from clinical formulas originally used for drug dosing; it gives a narrower target based on height and sex.
How often should I check my BMI?
Every 2–4 weeks is enough. Day-to-day weight swings of 1–2 kg are normal and come mostly from water and food, not fat.
