What’s in Recovery
These are the products people use after training and between sessions: post-workout formulas, amino acids, glutamine and night-time minerals.
- Post-workout: ready-made formulas taken after a session, usually with carbohydrates and amino acids.
- EAAs and BCAAs: amino acid powders, often flavoured, for sipping during or after training.
- Glutamine: usually unflavoured powder that mixes into a shake.
- ZMA: zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6, typically taken before bed.
- HMB: a leucine metabolite sold as capsules or powder.
Most people pair these with a protein shake. For performance before training, see Workout Essentials.
Recovery: questions
What is ZMA?
ZMA is a combination of zinc, magnesium and vitamin B6, usually sold as capsules and taken before bed.
Do I need BCAAs if I already drink a whey shake?
Whey already contains BCAAs. Many people use amino acid drinks during training when they don't want a full protein shake.
Is glutamine flavoured?
Most glutamine powders are unflavoured so they can be mixed into a protein shake or water.
