Read this eye-opening article and clear out the myth that is there in your head from the day you entered the gym.
Q- WHAT IS WHEY?
Whey is the watery portion of milk that separates from curd while making cheese. When we boil milk in order to kill bacteria, the milk separates into 2 parts , curd and water(whey). That liquid is then converted to whey protein powder through filtering process.
Q- BENEFITS OF WHEY PROTEIN?
In this article I won’t tell you things about whey protein that are easily available on google or theoretical benefits. I will tell you the practical benefits of whey protein.
Whey protein is an excellent source of protein for athletes who needs high quality protein with minimum calories possible.
Whey protein is an excellent source of protein for vegetarians who are trying to stay in shape while keeping track of their calories
Whey protein helps to build lean muscle mass which is a very useful aspect to keep in check.
Whey protein is really satiating and reduce hunger.
Whey protein may assist in weight loss by suppressing appetite, boosting metabolism, maintaining lean muscle mass while losing weight
Q- SIDE EFFECTS OF WHEY PROTEIN?
Everything in life has advantages and disadvantages. So as whey protein.
If you are intolerant to lactose then a whey concentrate protein will not be suitable for you, you will have to shift to whey isolate or hydrolize
If you consume too much whey, it may cause you bloating or nausea
If you have any liver or kidney problem, too much whey protein may worsen it.
Whey concentrate
When whey is collected as a by-product of cheese making process, it undergoes several processing steps to increase its protein content.
After a sufficient protein concentration is achieved, the protein is then dried down to form whey concentrate containing 80% protein by weight, rest is carbs and fats
Whey isolate
When a concentrate whey protein undergoes further processing to reduce the content of fat and carbs, a whey protein isolate is produced with 90% protein by weight
Difference between whey concentrate and whey isolate
Protein content – a (wpc) consists of 80% protein by weight whereas a (wpi) contains approx 90% protein content by weight.
Which is better- see this varies with person to person. If a my goal is to gain muscles while looking at the budget, i will go for a whey protein concentrate (wpc). If i am looking to complete my daily protein intake while losing weight, i will go for a whey protein isolate (wpi) as it has less calories in comparison to wpc.
Lactose- this is necessary to understand that there are many people who are lactose intolerant and cannot have milk or dairy products, they can go for whey protein isolate (wpi) as its lactose content is up to 1gram.
Cost- a whey protein isolate is relatively very costly as compared to a whey protein concentrate which creates a major difference between both types of whey protein
Whey protein concentrate OR whey protein isolate for weight loss.
As we clearly know that calories in vs calories out is the only weight to gain or lose weight, its nearly impossible to believe that whey protein concentrate, or whey protein isolate can cause weight loss.
Yes, they do assist in weight loss by replacing 120 calories whey protein isolate scoop with a 300calorie meal with same thermic effect.
If we have to choose any of both wpc or wpi for weight loss, whey protein isolate(wpi) is the answer as it has relatively less calories as compared to a whey protein concentrate(wpc)
So, now this is wrong to say that whey concentrate is better than whey isolate. It’s just that both are different from each other.
