Low Carb Snacks: Easy Indian Ideas and Recipes

Bowls of almonds, walnuts and peanuts as low carb snacks

The best low carb snacks are built around protein and healthy fats: nuts, seeds, eggs, paneer, hung curd and non-starchy vegetables. They keep you full between meals without the sugar and refined flour found in biscuits, namkeen and most packaged snacks. Below are simple ideas you can make at home, including three easy baked recipes.

What Makes a Good Low Carb Snack?

A low carb snack is simply one that gets most of its calories from protein and fat rather than sugar or starch. That does not make it low calorie, so portions still matter, especially with nuts and butter.

A useful snack usually has:

  • Some protein, such as eggs, paneer, curd or a protein shake, to help you feel satisfied.
  • Some fibre or crunch, from nuts, seeds or vegetables.
  • Little or no added sugar, so check labels for sugar, glucose syrup and maltodextrin.

If you are trying to lose weight, your total daily calories matter more than any single snack. Our calorie calculator gives you a starting point.

Quick Low Carb Snacks With No Cooking

These take less than five minutes and use everyday Indian ingredients:

  • Boiled eggs with salt, pepper and a pinch of chaat masala.
  • Paneer cubes tossed with lemon juice, black salt and roasted jeera.
  • Cucumber, carrot or capsicum sticks with a dip made from hung curd, garlic and mint.
  • A small handful of almonds, walnuts or peanuts, measured into a bowl rather than eaten from the packet.
  • Roasted pumpkin, sunflower or flax seeds sprinkled over curd.
  • Celery or cucumber with unsweetened peanut butter.

Easy Low Carb Snack Recipes

These three recipes can be made in a batch and stored for the week.

Italian-spiced roasted almonds

You need: 3 cups whole almonds, 1 egg white, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 2 teaspoons garlic powder, 2 teaspoons onion powder, 2 to 3 teaspoons mixed Italian herbs and half a teaspoon of salt.

  1. Whisk the egg white, oil, spices and salt in a large bowl.
  2. Add the almonds and stir until they are evenly coated.
  3. Spread on a lined tray and bake at about 135°C for 40 to 45 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes.
  4. Cool completely and store in an airtight jar.

Coconut and nut crunch

You need: 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts, 1 cup sliced almonds, about 20 g unsweetened desiccated coconut, 1 egg white, a sugar-free sweetener to taste, a few drops of vanilla essence and a pinch of salt.

  1. Mix the nuts and coconut in a bowl.
  2. Beat the egg white with the sweetener, vanilla and salt until soft peaks form.
  3. Fold the egg white into the nuts until everything is coated.
  4. Bake at about 175°C for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring once, until golden. Watch closely near the end, as nuts burn quickly.

Vanilla protein mug cake

You need: half a cup of vanilla whey protein powder, 1 egg, 1 tablespoon melted butter, a sugar-free sweetener to taste and a splash of milk.

  1. Mix everything in a microwave-safe mug or small oven dish until smooth.
  2. Microwave for about 60 to 90 seconds, or bake at about 160°C for 8 to 10 minutes, until just set.
  3. Let it cool slightly before eating. Top with a few berries if you like.

Low Carb Snacks to Avoid or Limit

Some foods sold as “healthy” are still high in carbohydrates or added sugar:

  • Baked or roasted namkeen made with besan, rice flakes or corn.
  • “Diet” biscuits, granola bars and many breakfast bars.
  • Dried fruit and fruit juices, which are high in natural sugar.
  • Flavoured yoghurts and milk drinks with added sugar.

None of these need to be banned, but they do not fit a low carb snack plan. If you want a full day of meals, our Indian fat-loss diet plan shows how snacks fit around the main meals.

Tips for Making Low Carb Snacking Work

  • Prepare ahead: Boil eggs, cut vegetables and portion nuts on the weekend.
  • Measure the fats: Nuts, seeds, butter and peanut butter are healthy but calorie-dense.
  • Drink water: Thirst is easy to mistake for hunger.
  • Check with a doctor first if you have diabetes, kidney disease or take medication, as changing your carbohydrate intake can affect these.
